Najran

One night is enough: see the mud-brick fort and souq, then move on to Abha or Jizan. Not a base.

Najran is a southern border city with a distinct Yemeni-influenced mud architecture and a lively souq. It is a 15 km linear strip along the highway, so you need a car or taxi. Most travellers pass through on the way to Asir or Jizan. The proximity to Yemen means police checkpoints are common and escorts are sometimes offered.

Watch out

Safety

Najran is safe for tourists, but the border proximity means police checkpoints are frequent. Do not attempt to cross into Yemen. Summer heat is a real risk.
  • Police checkpoints on the highway to Abha; escorts are sometimes offered but can slow you down.
  • Land travel to Yemen is not possible and is dangerous — do not attempt.
  • Summer heat is extreme; carry water in the car.
