Najran
One night is enough: see the mud-brick fort and souq, then move on to Abha or Jizan. Not a base.
Najran is a southern border city with a distinct Yemeni-influenced mud architecture and a lively souq. It is a 15 km linear strip along the highway, so you need a car or taxi. Most travellers pass through on the way to Asir or Jizan. The proximity to Yemen means police checkpoints are common and escorts are sometimes offered.
