Gerringong

One night is enough: swim at Werri Beach, walk the Kiama Coast Walk south end, whale-watch May–Nov. Base in Kiama if you want trains and shops.

Gerringong is the first coastal town south of Kiama and much quieter than it: a village on a hill above two beaches, Werri Beach and Gerringong Beach, with a station on the South Coast line. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one-night stop between Kiama and Berry, or as the southern end of the Kiama Coast Walk. It is a small town, so plan around the beach, the headland and the walk rather than a list of sights.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

The village, station and Gerringong Beach are within walking distance of each other, but the station sits on the hill, so it is a 2 km downhill walk to the beach and an uphill walk back. Werri Beach is a further 1.5–2 km north. Local buses are limited, so a car makes the beaches, headland and Berry easier; otherwise use the train between Kiama, Gerringong and Berry.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town. The real risks are surf rips at unpatrolled beaches, the uphill walk from the station and heat on the coastal walk: carry water, wear a hat and swim between the flags.
  • The station is up the hill: the walk back from the beach is uphill, and there is no taxi rank — book ahead or walk.
  • Trains south of Kiama are diesel and less frequent; check the timetable before you rely on a connection.
  • Surf beaches here have rips and no full-time lifeguards outside patrol hours: swim between the flags when patrolled.
  • Summer holiday lets book out weeks ahead and prices jump in January.
