Wollongong is the third-largest city in New South Wales, wedged on a coastal plain between a steep escarpment and the Pacific, about 90 minutes by train from Sydney. It is a working city with a steelworks at Port Kembla, a large university, and a chain of beach suburbs running north to Stanwell Park and south to Shellharbour and Kiama. Most travellers use it as a two-night coastal stop or a day trip from Sydney, not as a long base.

Getting around

Trains on the South Coast line link the CBD with the northern beach suburbs and south to Shellharbour and Kiama, roughly hourly at each station. Buses cover the rest; tap on and off with an Opal card or a contactless card. The free Gong Shuttle runs between the university and the CBD. A car is the easiest way to reach the escarpment lookouts and the Sea Cliff Bridge.

Safety

Wollongong is a low-crime city by Australian standards; the real risks are surf and rips, sunburn, and bushfire or heat on escarpment walks. Swim between the flags and check fire warnings before bush tracks.
  • Some beach suburbs are about a kilometre from their train station; check the walk before you commit.
  • The free Gong Shuttle only stops at green-signed stops, not ordinary bus stops.
  • Parking in CBD multi-storey car parks is cheap by the hour but capped daily; beach and foreshore parking is free.
  • Summer weekends and Sunday afternoons fill the Sydney-bound trains to standing room.
