Gerringong
One night is enough: swim at Werri Beach, walk the Kiama Coast Walk south end, whale-watch May–Nov. Base in Kiama if you want trains and shops.
Gerringong is the first coastal town south of Kiama and much quieter than it: a village on a hill above two beaches, Werri Beach and Gerringong Beach, with a station on the South Coast line. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one-night stop between Kiama and Berry, or as the southern end of the Kiama Coast Walk. It is a small town, so plan around the beach, the headland and the walk rather than a list of sights.

Get around
The village, station and Gerringong Beach are within walking distance of each other, but the station sits on the hill, so it is a 2 km (1.2 mi) downhill walk to the beach and an uphill walk back. Werri Beach is a further 1.5–2 km (0.9–1.2 mi) north. Local buses are limited, so a car makes the beaches, headland and Berry easier; otherwise use the train between Kiama, Gerringong and Berry. The village, station and Gerringong Beach are within walking distance of each other, but the station sits on the hill, so it is a 1.2 mi (2 km) downhill walk to the beach and an uphill walk back. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The station is up the hill: the walk back from the beach is uphill, and there is no taxi rank — book ahead or walk.
- Trains south of Kiama are diesel and less frequent; check the timetable before you rely on a connection.
- Surf beaches here have rips and no full-time lifeguards outside patrol hours: swim between the flags when patrolled.
- Summer holiday lets book out weeks ahead and prices jump in January.
A quiet, low-crime town. The real risks are surf rips at unpatrolled beaches, the uphill walk from the station and heat on the coastal walk: carry water, wear a hat and swim between the flags.
