Letenye is a small border town in Zala County, first recorded in 1341 and a town since 1989, with about 4,200 people. It sits where the M7 motorway meets the M70 towards Slovenia and the Croatian border, so almost everyone here is passing through. The town itself gives you a thermal bath, a Baroque mansion used as a community centre, a parish church and a handful of cheap kitchens. The real draw is the surrounding villages: Becsehely, Bázakerettye, Kistolmács and the forest railway towards Lenti. Plan one night, or two if you want the baths and the narrow-gauge train.

Getting around

There is no local public transport and no taxi service in Letenye. Volánbusz regional buses link the town with Nagykanizsa and the villages, but services are thin on weekends. A car is the practical way to reach the baths, the forest railway and the surrounding churches; the M7 and M70 are on the doorstep. The town centre is walkable in about 15 minutes end to end.

Safety

Letenye is a quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are driving on the M7 after a long day, unlit village roads at night and summer heat at the baths. Use 112 for anything urgent.
  • No local bus or taxi in town: plan around Volánbusz timetables or drive.
  • The thermal bath and the forest railway only run in the warm months; outside that window there is little to do.
  • Some guesthouses and the folk exhibition take bookings or visits by appointment only: call ahead.
  • Border queues on the M7/M70 can add time in summer; carry your passport or ID card.
