Use Novato as a one-night bed north of San Francisco, not a sightseeing base: downtown is walkable, the rest needs a car.
Novato is a sprawling Marin County suburb on US 101, 30–40 min north of San Francisco and 15 min north of San Rafael. It has a small, walkable downtown strip, two small museums, and open space at Olompali, Mount Burdell and Rush Creek. Most travellers pass through by car or use it as a cheaper bed than Sausalito or Mill Valley. One night is enough; a half-day covers the sights.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: downtown is walkable but the rest of town has long blocks and patchy sidewalks. SMART commuter rail has three Novato stops (Downtown, Hamilton, San Marin) linking San Rafael, Larkspur and Sonoma County. Marin Transit and Golden Gate Transit buses serve commuters, not sightseeing. Bikes face strong afternoon headwinds.
