Novato
Use Novato as a one-night bed north of San Francisco, not a sightseeing base: downtown is walkable, the rest needs a car.
Novato is a sprawling Marin County suburb on US 101, 30–40 min north of San Francisco and 15 min north of San Rafael. It has a small, walkable downtown strip, two small museums, and open space at Olompali, Mount Burdell and Rush Creek. Most travellers pass through by car or use it as a cheaper bed than Sausalito or Mill Valley. One night is enough; a half-day covers the sights.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: downtown is walkable but the rest of town has long blocks and patchy sidewalks. SMART commuter rail has three Novato stops (Downtown, Hamilton, San Marin) linking San Rafael, Larkspur and Sonoma County. Marin Transit and Golden Gate Transit buses serve commuters, not sightseeing. Bikes face strong afternoon headwinds.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Outside downtown you need a car; sidewalks are inconsistent and distances are long.
- SMART runs a commuter timetable: check the last train before you plan a night out.
- Inland summer afternoons can run hot while the coast stays foggy (check).
- Winter rain leaves Rush Creek trails muddy.
- US 101 through Marin backs up at commute hours and on Sunday evenings (check).
Novato is a low-crime suburb and safe by day and evening. The real risks are car break-ins at trailheads and mall lots, fast traffic on US 101 and unlit road shoulders after dark.
