Strathpeffer is a small Victorian spa village in Easter Ross, 20 miles northwest of Inverness, with sulphurous springs, a preserved railway station and a compact square. It works as a quiet one-night base for Castle Leod, Rogie Falls and the road to Ullapool, not as a multi-day destination.

Getting around

The village is walkable in 10 minutes end to end. Stagecoach Highlands bus 27 runs hourly Mon–Sat from Inverness via Dingwall and on to Contin, about an hour from Inverness; bus 28 links Dingwall. A car makes Castle Leod, Rogie Falls and the A835 to Ullapool practical.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are single-track roads with passing places, midges from June to August, and winter ice on the Rogie Falls path.
  • Castle Leod opens on selected days only, May–Sep afternoons: check dates before you travel.
  • Rogie Falls car park charges about £2 (≈ US$3) and has toilets; the path is rough and the bridge moves.
  • EE has no signal in the village; O2, Three and Vodafone give 4G, and there is no 5G.
  • Some village hotels get poor guest reports: read recent reviews before booking a cheap room.
