Struga sits flat on the Drim where it leaves Lake Ohrid, 15 km from Ohrid town. It has a small bazaar, a 13th-century church, a poetry festival in late August and cave churches along the west lake shore. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one night, not a three-night base.

The centre is walkable in 20 minutes end to end. Minibuses and shared taxis to Ohrid leave from the minibus stop every 20–40 min for 100 MKD. For the west-shore cave churches, take a taxi or check the local bus schedule; a car helps for Vevčani and the mountain villages.

Watch out

Safety

Struga is a low-risk town; the practical issues are summer traffic on the Ohrid road, uneven lakeside paths and cash-only village restaurants. Standard precautions at night near the bus station.
  • Lake water is clean but the shore drops off quickly in places; watch children near the outlet.
  • Cave churches keep limited, irregular hours: check locally before a taxi out.
  • The Ohrid–Struga road is busy in summer; allow extra time for the 15 km (9.3 mi).
  • Cash is still common in small village restaurants; carry denar.
