Ohrid is a UNESCO-listed town on a three-million-year-old lake, with medieval churches stacked on a hill above the water. The old town is compact and walkable; the lake and Sveti Naum need a boat or a bus. Three nights covers the core without rushing, and most travellers arrive by bus from Skopje in about 4.5 hours.

Getting around

The centre and old town are compact and best on foot; allow 20–30 minutes uphill to the fortress. Taxis are cheap but agree the fare before you get in. Local buses run to Struga and Sveti Naum; a daily boat also links the harbour with Sveti Naum in season.

Watch out

Safety

Ohrid is calm and low-crime; the real issues are taxi overcharging, unlit old-town steps after dark and cold water in spring. Use 112 for anything urgent.
  • Taxi drivers at the bus station may ask far more than the local rate; walk to the main road and flag a passing cab, or agree a price first.
  • Churches charge entry and often ask tourists to cover shoulders and knees; carry a light layer.
  • The bus station is about 2 km from the centre and charges a small departure fee.
  • Summer weekends fill the lakefront; book beds ahead in Jul–Aug.
