Ohrid is a UNESCO-listed town on a three-million-year-old lake, with medieval churches stacked on a hill above the water. Get around
The centre and old town are compact and best on foot; allow 20–30 minutes uphill to the fortress. Taxis are cheap but agree the fare before you get in. Local buses run to Struga and Sveti Naum; a daily boat also links the harbour with Sveti Naum in season.

Scams and watch-outs
- Taxi drivers at the bus station may ask far more than the local rate; walk to the main road and flag a passing cab, or agree a price first.
- Churches charge entry and often ask tourists to cover shoulders and knees; carry a light layer.
- The bus station is about 2 km from the centre and charges a small departure fee.
- Summer weekends fill the lakefront; book beds ahead in Jul–Aug.
Ohrid is calm and low-crime; the real issues are taxi overcharging, unlit old-town steps after dark and cold water in spring. Use 112 for anything urgent.
