Bar Harbor is a village of about 5,200 people on Mount Desert Island and the main gateway to Acadia National Park. The centre is walkable in 20 minutes, but the park's carriage roads, Cadillac Mountain and the coast need a car or the free Island Explorer shuttle. Two nights covers the essentials; three lets you add a whale watch or a quiet west-side day.

Getting around

Walk the village; drive or ride the free Island Explorer shuttle for the park. Island Explorer routes link the village, campgrounds and most trailheads from late June to early October. Bikes can go on the front racks. Parking in the village is tight in summer — leave the car and walk.

Watch out

Safety

Bar Harbor is a low-crime village; the real risks are summer traffic, tide cut-offs on the Bar Island land bridge and cold water. Lock your car and don't swim in Frenchman Bay without a wetsuit.
  • Summer parking in the village fills by mid-morning; use the shuttle or walk.
  • Cadillac Mountain summit road needs a vehicle reservation in season — book on recreation.gov.
  • The Precipice Trail closes when peregrine falcons nest; check the park site.
  • Bar Island is reachable only around low tide — check the tide table and don't get stranded.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the west side of the island.
