  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Blue Hill is a village of about 2,700 people on a tidal bay in Hancock County, 14 miles southwest of Ellsworth and roughly 45 minutes by road from Bar Harbor. It is a base for the Blue Hill Peninsula — galleries, a working harbor, a reversing falls and a small mountain — rather than a sightseeing town. Almost everything needs a car, and the summer season is short and busy.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

By car. There is no village taxi rank and no useful local bus; Downeast Transportation runs a weekday service to Ellsworth, mainly for errands and work, not for sightseeing. The grocery store, Tradewinds Marketplace, is about a mile up a steep hill from the harbor. Fuel up in Ellsworth or Bucksport.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Route 172 north

Bucksport

caution

Castine

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Route 175 and Route 166 south, via Penobscot

Historic village and a small waterfront; half a day.

Frenchboro, Long Island

overnight

Door to door: 2.5–3 h

Drive to Bass Harbor, then the state ferry

Ferry-dependent and thin on services; go only with a booked stay.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Blue Hill village (Main St / Water St / Union St)

Walk to breakfast, the harbor and galleries; inns and B&Bs, few rooms, book early.

South St and Ellsworth Rd

Motels and larger properties on the way in; still a short drive from the village.

East Blue Hill and Surry

Waterfront cottages and a campground; 10–20 min by car, quieter, need a car for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are driving the dark, deer-heavy back roads at night, cold water, and services that close out of season. Keep cash for small shops and check the weather before any boat or mountain plan.
  • Nothing works without a car: the mountain trailhead, the falls and the ponds are all outside the village.
  • Summer traffic on Route 172 and Route 15 through the village is slow; allow extra time in July and August.
  • Many galleries, inns and restaurants close from November to April or run weekends only — check before you book.
  • Swimming at the town park beach at the end of Water Street is not advised; use Woods Pond instead.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the peninsula's back roads; download offline maps.
