Blue Hill
Blue Hill, Maine
Give Blue Hill one full day and two nights: a car is required, the village walk takes 2 hours, and Blue Hill Mountain is a 1-hour climb.
Blue Hill is a village of about 2,700 people on a tidal bay in Hancock County, 14 miles southwest of Ellsworth and roughly 45 minutes by road from Bar Harbor. It is a base for the Blue Hill Peninsula — galleries, a working harbor, a reversing falls and a small mountain — rather than a sightseeing town. Almost everything needs a car, and the summer season is short and busy.

Get around
By car. There is no village taxi rank and no useful local bus; Downeast Transportation runs a weekday service to Ellsworth, mainly for errands and work, not for sightseeing. The grocery store, Tradewinds Marketplace, is about a mile up a steep hill from the harbor. Fuel up in Ellsworth or Bucksport.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Nothing works without a car: the mountain trailhead, the falls and the ponds are all outside the village.
- Summer traffic on Route 172 and Route 15 through the village is slow; allow extra time in July and August.
- Many galleries, inns and restaurants close from November to April or run weekends only — check before you book.
- Swimming at the town park beach at the end of Water Street is not advised; use Woods Pond instead.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the peninsula's back roads; download offline maps.
Very low crime; the real risks are driving the dark, deer-heavy back roads at night, cold water, and services that close out of season. Keep cash for small shops and check the weather before any boat or mountain plan.
