Bar Harbor
Give Bar Harbor 2–3 nights: one full day for Acadia's Park Loop Road and Cadillac summit, one for the village and a boat trip. Skip it in July–August if you hate crowds.
Bar Harbor is a village of about 5,200 people on Mount Desert Island and the main gateway to Acadia National Park. The centre is walkable in 20 minutes, but the park's carriage roads, Cadillac Mountain and the coast need a car or the free Island Explorer shuttle. Two nights covers the essentials; three lets you add a whale watch or a quiet west-side day.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer parking in the village fills by mid-morning; use the shuttle or walk.
- Cadillac Mountain summit road needs a vehicle reservation in season — book on recreation.gov.
- The Precipice Trail closes when peregrine falcons nest; check the park site.
- Bar Island is reachable only around low tide — check the tide table and don't get stranded.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the west side of the island.
Bar Harbor is a low-crime village; the real risks are summer traffic, tide cut-offs on the Bar Island land bridge and cold water. Lock your car and don't swim in Frenchman Bay without a wetsuit.
