Wells-Barkerville is a pair of small Cariboo towns 8 km apart, 80 km east of Quesnel on Highway 26. Barkerville is a restored gold-rush town and national historic site, open seasonally; Wells is the service base with the hotels, the ski trails and most of the beds. One night and one full day covers it; two nights if you add Bowron Lakes or winter skiing.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around
You need a car. Highway 26 runs from Quesnel to Wells (80 km) and on to Barkerville (8 km further). BC Transit Route 30 links Quesnel and Wells on Thursdays only, one return trip in the morning and one in the afternoon, $5 one-way (children 12 and under free). Inside Barkerville you walk; the townsite is compact and mostly level.

Watch out
Safety
- Barkerville is open seasonally and admission is charged: check opening dates and prices on the official site before you drive out.
- Barkerville sits about 700 m higher than Quesnel, so spring and autumn are noticeably colder: bring a warm layer even in June.
- Fuel and food are limited in Wells; fill up in Quesnel and carry cash for small operators.
- Cell coverage is patchy on Highway 26 and around Bowron Lakes: download offline maps.
- Winter driving on Highway 26 needs winter tyres and a check of road conditions.
