McBride is a village of about 600 people in the Robson Valley, on Highway 16 between Prince George (210 km) and Jasper (166 km). It is a rail and forestry town with a rebuilt 1919 station on Main Street, a small museum, and trail networks for summer biking and winter snowmobiling. Most travellers use it as a break in the drive or a stop on the VIA Rail Jasper–Prince Rupert route.

Getting around

McBride is small and mostly walkable along Main Street and 1st Avenue. A car is needed for the recreation sites, trailheads and lakes outside the village; there is no local bus. VIA Rail stops at McBride station on request only, and BC Bus North runs twice a week between Prince George and Valemount with a stop in McBride.

McBride is a small, low-crime village; the real risks are highway driving, wildlife on the road and weather that changes fast in the valley.
  • VIA Rail's McBride stop is a sign-post station: the train only stops if you have booked and flagged it.
  • BC Bus North runs only twice a week; check the current timetable before you build a plan around it.
  • July is the rainiest month in the valley — pack a shell even in summer.
