Glenfinnan
Go for one night or a half-day: the viaduct, the monument and the loch take 3–4 hours; there is no town here, so base in Fort William.
Glenfinnan is a village of about 139 people at the head of Loch Shiel, on the A830 between Fort William and Mallaig. Two things bring people: the 21-arch Glenfinnan Viaduct on the West Highland Line, and the monument marking where Charles Edward Stuart raised his standard on 19 August 1745. Everything is walkable, the train station is a museum, and beds are few — book early or sleep in Fort William, 17 miles east.

Walk. A pavement runs the length of the main road, and the back track links the top of the village to the shore via a footbridge. The station is at the top of the village, the monument and visitor centre at the bottom. Buses stop at the station road entrance and at the crossroads — hail them.

Safety
- Do not walk onto the viaduct: it is an active railway line and you are trespassing.
- Car parking is limited on busy days; the National Trust car park charges a daily fee of £3 (≈ US$4).
- Mobile signal is patchy on the A830 and drops out west towards Arisaig; download maps and tickets before you arrive.
- Viaduct maintenance scaffolding has spoiled photographs in recent years — check before a dedicated photo trip.
- Midges are bad on still, damp evenings from June to August; bring repellent.
- St Mary & St Finnan Church has been closed for restoration; check before walking up.
