Kalimpong sits at about 1,250 m between Deolo and Durpin Dara, with Kangchenjunga visible on clear mornings. It has fewer sights than Darjeeling and is far quieter, so it works as a two-night walking base and a launch point for the surrounding hill villages. Most travellers arrive by shared jeep or bus from Siliguri or Gangtok.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk, but the hillsides are steep. Taxis and auto-rickshaws cover the rest; a taxi from the market to Morgan House is about ₹40 one way. Shared jeeps run to Darjeeling, Gangtok and Siliguri; buses leave for Siliguri roughly every 20 minutes until about 16:00.

Kalimpong is calm and low-crime for a hill town; the real risks are monsoon landslides, steep unlit lanes after dark and long shared-jeep rides on winding roads.
  • Monsoon months bring landslides and blocked hill roads: check road status before any transfer.
  • This is a hill town — many roads are steep and unpaved; allow more time than the distance suggests.
  • Town shuts early: several restaurants stop serving by about 20:00–21:00.
  • Shared jeeps leave when full, not on a timetable; a private taxi costs many times more.
  • Carry cash in small notes; card acceptance outside hotels is limited.
