Zalaegerszeg
Give Zalaegerszeg one full day, not a base: the Göcsej village museum, the downtown squares and the thermal baths fill it. Two nights if you add the TV tower or a spa afternoon.
Zalaegerszeg is the administrative centre of Zala County, a small city of about 55,000 people in south-west Hungary. It is not on the main Budapest tourist circuit, so it works as a quiet one-day stop on the way to Slovenia or Lake Balaton rather than a destination in itself. The draw is the open-air Göcsej Village Museum, a compact historic downtown and a thermal bath complex on the edge of town.
