Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Switzerland ↗Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not the EU: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Switzerland ↗Switzerland is outside the EU customs area: allowances on meat, alcohol and tobacco are strict and checked at borders.
  • Switzerland ↗Motorways need a vignette (sticker or e-vignette) before you drive on them.

Rapperswil sits at the point where Lake Zurich narrows into the Obersee, 36–40 minutes by S-Bahn from Zurich. The old town, the castle and the wooden bridge fit into a half day on foot; the rest of the town's value is the lake, the boat pier and the Voralpen-Express, which starts its scenic run here. It is a small city, not a big one: one night is enough, and most travellers see it as a day trip.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Buses cover Jona and the outskirts; the station is on Untere Bahnhofstrasse. Bikes and e-bikes can be rented in town. Boats of the Lake Zurich navigation company (ZSG) call at the harbour, with a reduced winter timetable.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 40 min

S5, S7 or S15 from Rapperswil station

Direct trains every 10–15 min; the obvious half-day pairing.

Stein am Rhein

go

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Train via Winterthur, or boat and train in summer

Painted facades and the Rhine; a full day out.

Saint Gallen

go

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Voralpen-Express or IR via Zurich

The Voralpen-Express run itself is the reason to go.

Einsiedeln Abbey

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Train via Wädenswil and Pfäffikon, then bus

Check connections; the abbey is the draw, the village is small.

Pfäffikon and Alpamare

caution

Door to door: 30–45 min

Walk the Seedamm, or train one stop

Check whether the water park is open before crossing.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old town (Altstadt)

Between the station and the castle; restaurants, bars and the harbour on foot. Best for one night.

Harbour and lakefront

Hotels and guesthouses facing the water; quieter, 5–10 min walk to the station.

Jona

The merged town across the tracks; cheaper rooms, 10–15 min by bus or a 20-min walk.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are slippery boardwalk planks on the wooden bridge in rain, fast cyclists on the lakefront path, and swimming in the lake where no lifeguard is posted.
  • Knie's Kinderzoo is seasonal, roughly March to October: check dates before you build a day around it.
  • Boats and the Voralpen-Express run on limited winter schedules; check the operator timetable the day before.
  • Switzerland is not in EU roaming: check your plan or buy a Swiss or travel eSIM.
  • Card is accepted almost everywhere, but small kiosks and some market stalls are cash-only.
