Valladolid
Give Valladolid one full day and one night as a stop between Madrid and León or Salamanca: the sculpture museum and Plaza Mayor justify it, nothing more.

Rules in force · 9Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
- Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
- Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
- Spain ↗Spain is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
- Spain ↗High-speed trains have airport-style baggage screening at the station and boarding gates that close a few minutes before departure: arrive early.
- Spain ↗Carry your passport or ID: police may ask for it, and hotels must register every guest's document.
- Spain ↗The Alhambra in Granada and the Sagrada Família in Barcelona sell timed tickets that sell out weeks ahead in season; book on the official sites before you fix your dates.
Valladolid was briefly Spain's capital and still holds the country's best religious-sculpture collection, a 16th-century Plaza Mayor that became the model for squares across Spain and Latin America, and a compact walkable core on the east bank of the Pisuerga. It is a working city of about 310,000 people at 700 m on the Meseta, not a resort: most travellers pass through on the Madrid–León rail line or stop one night on the way to Salamanca. Two nights is the ceiling unless you use it as a base for Ribera del Duero wine country.

Getting around
The historic core is compact and walkable: Plaza Mayor to the cathedral is about 5 minutes, Plaza Mayor to the Sculpture Museum about 8. Auvasa runs 20 daytime bus routes plus three late-night routes at weekends and public holidays; single rides are cheap and the network covers the station and the Science Museum. There is an e-bike scheme. Taxis wait at a dozen ranks including Campo Grande station. For day trips, train and bus both leave from Campo Grande.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Salamanca
goDoor to door: About 2 h
Avanza bus every 2 h, about 90 min; or train via Medina del Campo
Better as an overnight than a return day: the old city deserves a night.
Segovia
goDoor to door: About 1 h
High-speed train from Campo Grande, about 35 min
Easy half-day out; the aqueduct and Alcázar are both in the compact centre.
Burgos
cautionDoor to door: 2–2.5 h
Train toward Irun/Vitoria, or bus; about 2 h
Doable as a long day for the cathedral, but the return timings are thin.
León
overnightDoor to door: 2–2.5 h
Train from Campo Grande, about 2 h
The cathedral and San Isidoro need a night, not a day return.
Zamora
cautionDoor to door: 2.5–3 h
Train via Medina del Campo, or bus; 2 h+
Romanesque churches are the draw; check connections before committing.
Palencia
goDoor to door: About 1 h
Train from Campo Grande, about 30–40 min
Short hop; the cathedral's crypt and the Cristo del Otero are the reasons.
Ponferrada
skipDoor to door: 3.5 h+
Train toward León/Galicia, 3 h+
Too far for a day; it belongs to a Camino or Galicia leg.

Around Plaza Mayor
The default: cafés, tapas bars and most sights within a 10-minute walk. Hotels here are small and central; book ahead in Semana Santa and the September fiesta.
Campo Grande station area
1 km south of the centre, next to the park. Best for a one-night rail stop with bags, or an early departure.0.6 mi south of the centre, next to the park. Best for a one-night rail stop with bags, or an early departure.
West bank (Pisuerga)
Modern expansion from the 1960s; cheaper rooms but you cross the river for everything. Only worth it if you have a car.
