Valladolid
Give Valladolid one full day and one night as a stop between Madrid and León or Salamanca: the sculpture museum and Plaza Mayor justify it, nothing more.
Valladolid was briefly Spain's capital and still holds the country's best religious-sculpture collection, a 16th-century Plaza Mayor that became the model for squares across Spain and Latin America, and a compact walkable core on the east bank of the Pisuerga. It is a working city of about 310,000 people at 700 m on the Meseta, not a resort: most travellers pass through on the Madrid–León rail line or stop one night on the way to Salamanca. Two nights is the ceiling unless you use it as a base for Ribera del Duero wine country.

The historic core is compact and walkable: Plaza Mayor to the cathedral is about 5 minutes, Plaza Mayor to the Sculpture Museum about 8. Auvasa runs 20 daytime bus routes plus three late-night routes at weekends and public holidays; single rides are cheap and the network covers the station and the Science Museum. There is an e-bike scheme. Taxis wait at a dozen ranks including Campo Grande station. For day trips, train and bus both leave from Campo Grande.

Scams and watch-outs

- Summer afternoons hit 30°C+ and many small museums and churches shut for siesta, roughly 14:00–17:00.
- Some museum hours are morning-plus-evening with a long midday gap: plan the day around two windows, not one.
Valladolid is a calm, low-crime city; the real risks are pickpockets around Plaza Mayor and the station, summer heat on the open Meseta, and bars where you should ask the price of a tapa before ordering a round.
