Sturgeon BaySturgeon Bay, Wisconsin
Give Sturgeon Bay 2 nights as a Door County base: 1 day for walkable downtown, museums and the canal lighthouses, 1 day for a state park. A car is needed for the parks and wineries.
Sturgeon Bay is the largest city in Wisconsin's Door County and the practical gateway to the peninsula: two shipyards, three drawbridges and a working canal between Green Bay and Lake Michigan. Downtown is walkable in an hour, but the parks, lighthouses and wineries that make the area worth the drive are spread along WIS 42 and WIS 57, so a car decides your trip. Most travellers use it for 2 nights on the way north, or 1 night if Door County is the real destination.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the default: WIS 42 runs south to Manitowoc and north through the bayshore villages, WIS 57 links Green Bay to Sturgeon Bay as an expressway. Downtown itself is compact and flat, with sidewalks on both sides of most streets, so park once and walk the 3rd Avenue and Madison Avenue districts. The Ice Age Trail follows Madison Avenue and the bay walkway at Bay View Park and continues south toward Algoma. No useful local bus network for visitors — check the city site if you are car-free.

Watch out
Safety
- Distances between sights are longer than they look: Cave Point, Whitefish Dunes and Peninsula State Park are all a drive, not a walk.
- State park admission is charged per vehicle at the gate and rates differ by park: Potawatomi and Whitefish Dunes $8 Wisconsin plates / $11 out-of-state, Peninsula $13 — check current fees.
- The drawbridges open for marine traffic and can hold traffic for several minutes in summer.
- Cell coverage thins out on the county roads away from WIS 42 and WIS 57.
- Winter closes or shortens hours at several attractions and wineries: confirm before a November–March trip.
