Storms River is a small village on the N2 in the Eastern Cape, the gateway to Tsitsikamma National Park. The village itself is a few streets of lodges, backpackers and eateries; the draw is the coast 5 km west — the Storms River mouth suspension bridge, the first kilometres of the Otter Trail, and the forest and gorge activities around it. Most travellers pass through on a Garden Route self-drive and stop for one or two nights. A car makes the difference: without one you are dependent on shuttles, tours and the occasional bus.

Getting around

The village is walkable in 10 minutes end to end. Everything else — the park mouth, the Big Tree, Bloukrans, the canopy tour — needs a car, a tour shuttle or a paid transfer; there is no local bus network. Fill up on the N2 before you turn off, and drive the pass roads in daylight.

Watch out

Safety

The village is small and quiet; the real risks are the N2 at night, wet forest trails, cold water at the mouth and leaving valuables in a parked car. Standard city caution applies after dark, and walk in groups.
  • The park gate at Storms River Mouth closes at night; day visitors must leave before closing — check the current time at the gate.
  • The Otter Trail and some gorge activities need bookings weeks or months ahead in season.
  • Bungee and canopy operators run on weather; a booked slot can be cancelled the same morning.
  • Card machines and ATMs are limited in the village — carry some rand cash.
  • Do not leave bags visible in a parked car at trailheads or viewpoints.
