Gort

Give Gort one night as a Burren and Yeats-country base with a car; without wheels, skip it and sleep in Galway or Ennis.

Gort is a small market town of about 2,900 people on the edge of the Burren, in low farming country 40 min south of Galway by train. Its pull is literary and archaeological: Coole Park, Thoor Ballylee and Kilmacduagh's round tower sit a few kilometres out, so a car or bike changes the trip completely. Most travellers use it for a single night between Galway and Clare, or skip it for Ennis.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland is in the EU but not in the Schengen area; it sets its own entry rules and a Schengen visa is not valid for Ireland. Check Irish immigration for your passport.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland and the UK form the Common Travel Area, with no routine checks on the land border. Visitors who are not Irish or British must still meet UK rules (including the UK ETA where it applies) to enter Northern Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Driving is on the left; rural roads are narrow with hedges and few passing places.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable in 10 min, but Coole Park, Thoor Ballylee and Kilmacduagh are 3–6 km out with no useful bus: bring or hire a car, or use a bike on the back roads. Trains run to Galway (about 40 min) and Limerick (about 80 min) five times a day; Expressway Bus 51 stops here hourly between Galway and Shannon Airport, Ennis and Limerick. A local taxi firm covers short hops and airport runs.

Door to door: About 15 min

Drive or cycle 3 km (1.9 mi) north-west of town

Woodland walks and a lake; the autograph tree and visitor centre are the reason to come.

Door to door: About 15 min

Drive 5 km (3.1 mi) south-west, then walk the last stretch

Round tower about 34.5 m tall, one of the best in Ireland; go early for empty photos.

Door to door: About 15 min

Drive 6 km (3.7 mi) north-east towards Ballylee

Yeats's tower house; open daily 11:00–17:00 April to September, adult ticket €7.

Door to door: About 45 min

Drive north-west via Kilcolgan or Gort to Ballyvaughan

Limestone plateau with prehistoric monuments; a full day, not a quick stop.

Door to door: About 40 min

Train from Gort station, five a day

Better as a base than a day trip, but easy for an evening of music and pubs.

Door to door: About 40–50 min

Train towards Limerick, or Expressway Bus 51

Abbey and castle country; a good wet-day alternative.

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min by car

Drive via Ballyvaughan and Lisdoonvarna, or bus to Ennis then change

Doable by car, awkward by public transport; consider sleeping in Doolin instead.

Quiet countryside stays near the abbey; you need a car for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Gort is a quiet, low-crime town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are unlit country roads with no footpath, fast traffic on the N18 approach, and wet, slippery limestone if you head into the Burren.
  • Sights are spread over 6 km (3.7 mi) of country roads with no footpath: do not plan to walk between them.
  • Gort station has no ticket office, toilets or staff: buy online or at the machine before boarding.
  • The last buses towards Gort from Galway and Limerick leave around 20:00; check the day's timetable.
  • Fiddaun Castle is on private land and only visited with the landowner's permission.
  • Lough Cutra Castle is a private residence with no tours.
