The Burren is a bare limestone plateau in north County Clare, roughly between Ballyvaughan, Kilfenora, Carran and the coast at Doolin. There is no gate, no fee and no perimeter: you drive between dolmens, caves and abbey ruins, then walk onto the rock itself. One full day covers the highlights by car; two nights let you add the Cliffs of Moher and a coastal walk without rushing. A car is close to essential — buses reach Ballyvaughan, Doolin and Lisdoonvarna but not the interior sites.

- Atlantic weather: rain in any month, wind on the coast, and the plateau can be several degrees colder than Ennis. May to June and September give the best odds; July and August are busiest and wettest.
The limestone holds heat and drains fast, so the ground is walkable after rain, but mist and low cloud can hide the coast road within minutes.
