Give Tulungagung one full day for the marble workshops and Majapahit temples, or two if you add the south-coast beaches — it is a stop, not a base.

Tulungagung is a regency in East Java, about 154 km southwest of Surabaya, and one of Indonesia's largest marble-producing areas. The town itself is a working provincial capital with a park and a museum; the sights that justify the trip — Majapahit-era temples, a Japanese-era tunnel-dam and a run of white-sand south-coast beaches — sit 15–40 km out and need a car or scooter. Most travellers pass through on the Surabaya–Malang–Blitar rail corridor and stay one or two nights.

Watch out
Safety
- South-coast beaches have strong surf and no lifeguards: stay out of the water unless locals say it is safe.
- Roads to the beaches narrow and darken early; do not drive back after dusk on a scooter.
- Marble shops quote per piece, not per kilo: agree the total and delivery before paying.
- Some temples and the museum keep short hours and close on Sundays or public holidays: check before travelling out.
