Tulungagung is a regency in East Java, about 154 km southwest of Surabaya, and one of Indonesia's largest marble-producing areas. The town itself is a working provincial capital with a park and a museum; the sights that justify the trip — Majapahit-era temples, a Japanese-era tunnel-dam and a run of white-sand south-coast beaches — sit 15–40 km out and need a car or scooter. Most travellers pass through on the Surabaya–Malang–Blitar rail corridor and stay one or two nights.
