Territory capital · Namibia

Keetmanshoop

Stop one night, not two: fuel, tyres, the quiver tree forest at sunset, then drive on. Two nights only if you hike the Fish River Canyon.

Keetmanshoop is the capital of the ǁKaras region and the main B1 stop between Windhoek and South Africa, about 500 km south of the capital. Most travellers use it to refuel, check tyres and sleep. The reason to build in an afternoon is the quiver tree forest and Giant's Playground, 15 km out on the M29, best at sunset or sunrise. The town itself is a small, old German-era grid with a museum in a 1895 mission church.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • Southern Africa ↗A rental car may leave its home country only with the rental company's cross-border letter, the registration papers and paid road taxes at each post; driving into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Angola without them ends at the border.
  • Southern Africa ↗Across the subregion, plan every road leg to arrive before sunset: livestock, wildlife, pedestrians and unlit trucks make night driving the main cause of serious visitor accidents.
  • Namibia ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Namibian government sources before booking: since 1 April 2025 citizens of 33 countries, including the US, UK, most of the EU, Canada and Australia, need a visa on arrival or an e-visa.
  • Namibia ↗Taking a rental car into Botswana, South Africa, Zambia or Zimbabwe needs written permission from the rental company and the right papers; ask when you book.
  • Namibia ↗Etosha gates open at sunrise and close at sunset: you must be inside a camp or out of the park by closing time.

Getting around

You need a car. The town is small enough to walk between the centre, the museum and most lodges, but the quiver tree forest and Giant's Playground are 15 km out on the M29 with no public transport. Fuel up and check tyre pressures here: the hot asphalt on the B1 and B4 is hard on tyres. Long-distance coaches and shared taxis (combies) pass through on the Windhoek–South Africa route; the overnight train from Windhoek takes about 10 hours, seats only, and the bus is the better option.

go

Door to door: About 30 min each way

Drive 15 km (9.3 mi) on the M29 to farm Gariganus; buy the permit at Quiver Tree Forest Camp

Go for the last hour of light or first light. The forest is about 200 quiver trees on 2 ha; the Giant's Playground boulders are 3 km (1.9 mi) further north-east.

Fish River Canyon

overnight

Door to door: 2.5–3 h each way

B4 west, then the C12 and the access road to the main viewpoints

Too far for a comfortable return day. Sleep at Hobas or Ai-Ais and see the canyon at sunrise. Multi-day canyon hikes must be arranged in advance through the official park office.

Tastings and light lunches; opening days and hours change before driving out.

Town centre (5th Avenue / 5th Street)

Walk to restaurants, the museum and the churches; best for a one-night stop with a car parked off-street.

Quiver Tree Forest Rest Camp (farm Gariganus, M29)

15 km (9.3 mi) out; camping with the forest and Giant's Playground permits included, so you can shoot sunset and sunrise without driving back in the dark.

Seeheim (45 km west on the B4)

Historic railway-junction hotel and campsite; a detour, not a base for town errands.

Watch out

Safety

Keetmanshoop is a small, quiet town and the usual risks are road risks: tired driving on long straight B-roads, animals after dark, and summer heat. Keep the car locked and valuables out of sight, and don't walk far after dark.
  • Never drive outside towns after dark: stray livestock and unlit gravel roads.
  • Carry cash: some lodges and campsites, including Seeheim, take cash only.
  • The quiver tree forest and Giant's Playground need a permit from Quiver Tree Forest Camp; entering between sunset and sunrise needs a separate photographer's permit (N$500).
  • Summer midday heat is serious: carry 3–4 L of water per person in the car.
  • Fuel up when you see a station; the next one on the B1 or B4 can be far.
