Jablanica sits on the Neretva between Konjic and Mostar, on the Sarajevo–Mostar road and rail line. Its one unmissable sight is the blown railway bridge and the museum beside it, both walkable from the bus stop. The town is small and most travellers pass through; the reason to stay a night is the hiking in the Prenj and Blidinje mountains, where huts and marked trails start above the valley.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to cover on foot: bus station to bridge and museum is roughly 15–20 min. For Blidinje/Risovac or the Prenj trailheads you need a car, a taxi or a lift; there is no useful local bus. The M17 is fast and shoulderless, so cycling the valley is not recommended.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime; the real risks are the fast M17 road, off-trail landmines in the surrounding hills and summer valley heat. Use marked paths and offline maps for any hike.
  • Do not walk on the M17 after dark; there is no lighting and traffic is fast.
  • Landmines remain a risk off-trail around Konjic and in the mountains: stay on marked paths and use offline maps.
  • Museum hours are limited (roughly 09:00–16:00) and can change; check before you travel for it.
  • The bridge remains sit in the river below the road; the path down is uneven and slippery after rain.
