Helensburgh sits at the southern edge of the Royal National Park, halfway between Sydney and Wollongong, ringed by bushland and the Illawarra escarpment. It is a small town of about 6,400 people with one real draw — the disused railway tunnel where glow worms live — plus a zoo, a Hindu temple and a dam. Most travellers come on a day trip or use it as a quiet one-night stop on the South Coast line.

Getting around

The town is walkable but hilly — the station to the shops is a steep 30-min walk. Local bus Route 15 links the station to the centre in about 15 min. A car is far easier for the zoo, temple and dam, which sit outside the centre.

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are steep, unlit bush tracks, mud in the glow worm tunnel, and summer bushfire closures in the surrounding national park.
