Hisarya is a small spa town in the Sredna Gora valley, 45 km north of Plovdiv, built inside and around a 4th-century Roman fortress. Its 22 mineral springs (24–49 °C) feed hotel pools and public drinking fountains, and the walled core holds ruins, a park and most of the hotels. It is a slow, low-cost stop: one or two nights of bathing and walking, not a sightseeing city.

Getting around

The centre is small and mostly flat: the station, the walls, the park and the main hotels are all within a 15-minute walk. Three local bus lines link the outlying quarters. For anything outside town you need a car, taxi or the bus from the station.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a Bulgarian resort town: the real risks are hot springs (long soaks dehydrate you), unmarked forest paths, and pools or restaurants that close out of season without notice.
  • The branch-line train to Hisarya has been suspended during works at Sofia Central; check the current BDZ timetable before planning a rail arrival.
  • The station and BDZ timetables call the stop Hisar (Хисар), not Hisarya.
  • The bus ticket office reportedly closes around 15:00; after that and at weekends buy from the driver.
  • Footpaths to the hill crosses and into Sredna Gora are poorly marked or missing from maps: carry a GPS map and water.
  • Many pools and restaurants run seasonally; in winter some spa facilities close or open only at weekends.
