Plovdiv is Bulgaria's second city and one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited places, built around six rocky hills above the Maritsa river. The compact Old Town, the Roman theatre and stadium, and the Kapana creative district sit within a 20-minute walk of each other, so two nights covers the core without rushing. It is also the best base for day trips into the Upper Thracian Plain and the Rhodope foothills.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Glavnata pedestrian street, the Roman Stadium, Kapana and the Old Town are all within about 20 minutes on foot. City buses cost a flat fare paid to a conductor; taxis are cheap for short hops but order one by phone or app rather than taking the car waiting at the rank. Trains to Sofia run several times a day and are slower than the hourly buses.

Watch out

Safety

Plovdiv is generally safe for visitors; the real issues are taxi overcharging at ranks and stations, cobblestone slips in the Old Town, and pickpockets in the busiest pedestrian stretches on summer evenings.
  • Order taxis by phone or app and agree the fare; cars waiting at ranks and stations can charge several times the normal rate.
  • Old Town streets are cobbled and steep; wear shoes with grip and expect stairs.
  • Some Old Town museums and house-museums keep short or seasonal hours — check before you climb up.
  • Summer afternoons in Jul–Aug are hot; do the hills and Old Town early or late.
  • The singing fountains in the central park run on selected summer evenings only — check locally.
