  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Daytona Beach is a 37 km stretch of hard-packed Atlantic sand you can drive on, plus the Speedway that replaced the old beach course in 1959. It works as a 2-night beach stop between Orlando and St. Augustine, or as a race-week base. Outside events it is cheaper and quieter than the Orlando resorts 90 minutes inland.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical default: A1A runs the length of the beach and I-95 and I-4 connect the region. VOTRAN buses cover the city and the airport for a low one-way fare, but service is thin in the evening. Taxis do not cruise for fares — call one. Beach driving is allowed in marked sections at walking pace and needs a permit.

Mostly a manatee-season stop at Blue Spring; little else.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Beachfront A1A (Atlantic Avenue)

Oceanfront hotels and condos between the Boardwalk and the Bandshell; walk to the pier, the beach and most restaurants.

Daytona Beach Shores

Quieter condos and resorts 5–10 minutes south by car; better for families and longer stays.

Speedway / International Speedway Blvd

Chain hotels near the track and the airport; cheapest rates, but you need a car for the beach.

Downtown / Beach Street

Halifax River side, museums and cafés; 10–15 minutes' walk or a short drive from the ocean.

Watch out

Safety

Daytona Beach is fine by day around the beach and Speedway; the usual cautions are rip currents, summer heat and unlit side streets after dark. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight on the beach.
  • Race weekends and Bike Week close or congest the roads around the Speedway and A1A: check event dates before booking.
  • Summer heat index can pass 40°C; plan beach time before 11:00 and after 16:00.
  • Atlantic rip currents are real: swim near lifeguard towers.
  • Hurricane season runs June–November, peaking August–October.
  • Prices shown exclude Florida sales tax; add it at the till.
