Daytona Beach Shores is a 5.5-mile strip of condos, small motels and beach parks on the barrier island south of Daytona Beach, incorporated in 1967. It has no airport, no train station and almost no nightlife; you come for the beach, the pier and easy access to Ponce Inlet and New Smyrna Beach. A car is close to essential.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: A1A (South Atlantic Avenue) runs the length of the beach side, Peninsula Drive runs along the Halifax River. Votran buses cover Volusia County and a one-day pass costs $4. Parking at the beach parks is free but fills on weekends.

A quiet, low-crime beach town. The real risks are rip currents, summer heat and storms in hurricane season (1 June–30 November): check the forecast and swim near a lifeguard.
