Base in Valencia and come for half a day: the monastery tour plus the beach is 3–4 hours. Sleep here only if you want a cheap, quiet stop.
El Puig de Santa María is an orange-growing village 15 km north of Valencia, known for a fortified 13th-century monastery and a long, low-key beach. Trains and buses from Valencia run roughly hourly, so it works as a half-day escape from the city rather than a destination in its own right. Two nights is the most most travellers need.

The village is small enough to walk. For the beach and the watchtower, take Autos Vallduxense bus 112 or one of the local taxis; the beach is about 4 km from the monastery. The Via Xurra greenway is a flat, mostly paved 15 km cycle route from Valencia.

Watch out
Safety
- Monastery visits are guided tours only, in Spanish and English; turn up at a scheduled slot or you may not get in.
- The Ara Christi charterhouse and the Civil War trenches are visitable only on pre-booked tours run a couple of times a month.
- Beach is pebble and gravel in places: bring shoes, not just flip-flops.
- Summer afternoons are hot and shade on the beach is limited; go early.
