El Puig de Santa María is an orange-growing village 15 km north of Valencia, known for a fortified 13th-century monastery and a long, low-key beach. The village is small enough to walk. For the beach and the watchtower, take Autos Vallduxense bus 112 or one of the local taxis; the beach is about 4 km (2.5 mi) from the monastery. - Summer afternoons are hot and shade on the beach is limited; go early.
Very safe; the main issues are summer heat, uneven ground at the castle ruins and on pebble beaches, and limited late transport back to Valencia. Keep to the marked paths on the hill.
