  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Crawford is a town of about 1,000 people in the Nebraska Panhandle, three miles east of Fort Robinson State Park. It is a car-only stop: no airport, no train, no bus worth planning around. The draw is the fort, the fossil and rock sites nearby, and a quiet night on the road between the Black Hills and Scottsbluff. One night covers the town; two let you add Toadstool and Agate Fossil Beds.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

You need a car. Crawford sits at the junction of US 20 and Nebraska Highways 2 and 71, and there is no useful public transport. The town itself is about one square mile and walkable; a walking path runs from the city park entrance to Fort Robinson. Downtown is reached by turning west on Main Street from Highway 2/71 or north on 2nd Street from US 20.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Fort Robinson State Park

go

Door to door: 10–15 min by car

Drive US 20 west about 3 mi, or walk the path from Crawford City Park

The main reason to stop here: trails, fishing, jeep rides, an indoor pool, and a museum in the old fort buildings.

Toadstool Geologic Park

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Highway 2/71 for about 11 mi, left on Moody Road, right on Toadstool Road, then the first crossing road; last stretch unpaved

Rock formations and short trails; $3 per vehicle day use, $15 per vehicle per night, pay onsite. No water at the six campsites.

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument

go

Door to door: About 1 h

About 25 mi west to Harrison, right on Highway 29 for about 22 mi, east on River Road and follow signs

Free entry, dawn to dusk; visitor centre on seasonal hours. No camping at the monument.

Chadron

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive US 20 east about 25 mi

Museums, a state park and the nearest small airport.

Scottsbluff and Scotts Bluff National Monument

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Drive south via Highway 71 and US 26

Doable as a long day; better as an overnight if you also want the monument trails.

Black Hills, Mount Rushmore and Deadwood, South Dakota

overnight

Door to door: 2–3 h to the hills

Drive north on Highway 71 toward Hot Springs, then US 385

Too far for a return day; treat it as the next stop on a road trip.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown Crawford

Walkable core on 2nd and Main; the Hilltop Motel on US 20 is the practical in-town bed.

Fort Robinson State Park

Cabins, barrack rooms and camping 3 mi west; book ahead for summer weekends.

Crawford City Park

Free camping with electrical hookups at the west end of Main Street; the railroad is close and trains whistle at night.

High Plains Homestead area

Glampground and RV park northwest toward Toadstool and the Oglala National Grassland; a car is required.

Watch out

Safety

Crawford is a quiet small town and street crime is not the issue. The real risks are distance and weather: long empty drives, unpaved roads after rain or snow, winter cold, and no reliable phone signal outside town.
  • No airport, train or bus: without a car you are stuck.
  • Cell coverage is 4G in town but can drop outdoors or on rural roads; download offline maps.
  • Toadstool Geologic Park is reached by about 10 mi of unpaved road: check conditions after rain or snow.
  • Hunting season fills motels and restaurants; book beds ahead in fall.
  • Winter closes or shortens hours at several sites; check before driving.

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Crawford. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Sep · avoid Dec–Feb (cold, snow, some sites on winter hours) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 4 areas to sleep in

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for CDR and BFF: current service, drive times, and a motel fallback if a flight is cancelled.
  2. Four walking clusters with anchors: downtown 2nd Street, Crawford City Park and the fort path, Fort Robinson itself, and the Toadstool road.
  3. Place pages with verified hours and fees (Fort Robinson Museum, Trailside Museum, Crawford Historical Museum, Toadstool, Agate Fossil Beds) and eat pages with seasonal closing dates.
  4. Winter and hunting-season fixtures so the seasonal warnings can go green.
