Crawford
Crawford, Nebraska
Base here 1–2 nights for Fort Robinson, 3 mi west: arrive by car, sleep in town or in a fort cabin, and skip it if you have no vehicle.
Crawford is a town of about 1,000 people in the Nebraska Panhandle, three miles east of Fort Robinson State Park. It is a car-only stop: no airport, no train, no bus worth planning around. The draw is the fort, the fossil and rock sites nearby, and a quiet night on the road between the Black Hills and Scottsbluff. One night covers the town; two let you add Toadstool and Agate Fossil Beds.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No airport, train or bus: without a car you are stuck.
- Cell coverage is 4G in town but can drop outdoors or on rural roads; download offline maps.
- Toadstool Geologic Park is reached by about 10 mi of unpaved road: check conditions after rain or snow.
- Hunting season fills motels and restaurants; book beds ahead in fall.
- Winter closes or shortens hours at several sites; check before driving.
Crawford is a quiet small town and street crime is not the issue. The real risks are distance and weather: long empty drives, unpaved roads after rain or snow, winter cold, and no reliable phone signal outside town.
