Pskov is one of Russia's oldest cities, 3–5 h from Saint Petersburg by train or bus, with a walled Krom, a 12th-century fresco cathedral and dozens of 14th–16th century churches on the UNESCO list. It is a compact, walkable stop on the Silver Ring, best used as a one-night break between Saint Petersburg and Novgorod rather than a destination in itself.
