Dawson Creek is a small Peace River prairie city and the official Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway. Almost everyone stops here for one night on the way north to Fort Nelson and the Yukon, or as a break on the Edmonton–Prince George run. The sights fit into half a day; the town is a service stop, not a destination in itself.

Getting around

The grid forces traffic onto two arterials, 8 Street (north–south) and Alaska Avenue (northwest–southeast), meeting at the traffic circle with the Mile 0 statue. BC Transit runs local buses Monday–Saturday; taxis are cheap for short hops. A car is the practical choice if you are continuing on the Alaska Highway.

A quiet, safe small city; the real risks are long empty drives, winter cold and wildlife on the highway. Keep bear-aware habits if you camp, and never pass a fuel stop with a low tank.
