Veliky Novgorod is one of Russia's oldest cities, first recorded in 859, and the core of the medieval Novgorod Republic. Its Kremlin, the Millennium of Russia monument and a ring of 11th–17th century churches sit inside a compact, walkable centre on the Volkhov river, 108 km from St Petersburg and 530 km from Moscow. Most travellers come for one day from St Petersburg; the city rewards a night because the sights are spread across both banks.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: the Kremlin, the footbridge and the Trade side are within about 20 minutes on foot. Buses and trolleybuses cover the rest of the city and run frequently; taxis are cheap and easy to flag or book by app. Bicycle rental is available in the Kremlin park in season.

Safety

Novgorod is a small, calm city and the centre feels safe by day and early evening. The real risks are winter cold and ice, uneven riverbank paths, and pickpocketing in crowds; keep to lit streets after dark and use official taxis.
  • Novgorod's own airport is not operational; fly to St Petersburg (LED) and continue by train, bus or car.
  • Trains from St Petersburg run mainly early morning and late evening; check times before you plan a same-day return.
  • Many churches keep limited hours and some close outside services; check locally before walking out to the monasteries.
  • Winter is long and cold, with short daylight; the riverbank paths and some sites are less usable from November.
  • Carry rubles in cash for small cafés, buses and church entry; card acceptance is uneven outside the centre.
