Jurmo is an outer-archipelago island in the Archipelago Sea, reached by a free ferry from Pärnäs in Nagu, a flat treeless heath of heather and juniper with cobble beaches, a bird station and stone circles nobody can explain. It is small: 6 km end to end, harbour to chapel 1.4 km. Come for walking, birds and quiet, not for services.

Getting around

Walk. The island is 6 km end to end and the harbour-to-chapel leg is 1.4 km; the nearest munkring is 700 m beyond the chapel. A bike helps if you want the eastern sights inside a short shore stop. Ask locally about ATV luggage transfer if you are staying in the village. Stay on trails to limit erosion.

Watch out

Safety

A summer island with summer rules: sun, wind, ticks and no water after the harbour. Carry what you need, close the gates, and check the sea forecast if you arrive by your own boat.
  • The western part of the island is off limits 1 Apr–31 Jul for bird nesting; reserve rules may forbid leaving trails.
  • No drinking water after the harbour; sea water is undrinkable even this far out.
  • Ticks are present: check for bites, Borreliosis and TBE are both risks.
  • Almost no shade or wind shelter; sunburn and hot tents are the real summer hazards.
  • Close every gate you open; cows graze in the east and alpacas roam the village.
  • The free ferry calls late and leaves early outside the summer day-trip pattern: confirm times before booking anything.
