Kassel

Give Kassel one full day for the Bergpark water displays and one for the museums; two nights in the centre is enough.

Kassel is the main city of North Hesse and the home of the UNESCO-listed Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, a hillside park crowned by the Herkules statue. The old centre was flattened in 1945 and rebuilt in plain 1950s style, so the draw is the park, the art collections and the Brothers Grimm legacy rather than the streets. It also hosts the documenta contemporary art exhibition every five years, which fills every bed in town.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Getting around

Trams and buses (KVG/NVV) cover the centre and Wilhelmshöhe; a weekly ticket is worth it if you stay several days, and the Kasselcard bundles transport with museum discounts. The Hauptbahnhof is close to the centre, but long-distance trains use Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe, 4 km west — allow 15–20 min by tram between them.

Watch out

Safety

Kassel is a low-risk city. Watch for pickpockets around Friedrichsplatz and the tram stops, take care on the Bergpark's steep gravel paths and steps, and carry a little cash — some smaller cafés and museums take cards only above a minimum.
  • Long-distance trains stop at Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe, not the central Hauptbahnhof: check which station your ticket names.
  • The Wasserspiele run only on Wednesdays, Sundays and public holidays from 1 May to 3 Oct, starting about 14:30 — plan the day around it.
  • Several park sights (Löwenburg, Weißensteinflügel) switch to weekend-only hours from mid-November to late February.
  • Flixtrain and DB tickets are not interchangeable: buy the right one.
  • documenta years (every five years) send hotel prices up and rooms sell out months ahead.
