Nurmijärvi is a fast-growing commuter municipality about 30 km north of Helsinki, made up of four separate urban areas — Klaukkala, the church village of Nurmijärvi, Rajamäki and Röykkä — plus farmland between them. There is no railway passenger service in the municipality, so you reach it by bus or car, and you need wheels to link the sights. It suits a half-day or day trip from Helsinki for the Aleksis Kivi sites, the Vantaa River rapids and the alpaca and ostrich farms, not a multi-night stay.

Getting around

Local buses (Korsisaari) link the urban areas and run to Helsinki and Hyvinkää, but service is thin outside peak hours. A car is the practical way to reach the rapids, farms and manor. Kivenkyyti is an on-demand ride service inside the municipality; taxis are limited, so book ahead.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe by international standards. The real risks are dark, icy roads and paths in winter, thin bus service in the evening, and unlit rural roads if you walk after dusk: carry a light and a charged phone.
  • No railway passenger station in the municipality: the nearest are Kivistö (Vantaa), Hyvinkää and Jokela.
  • Sights are spread across four villages; without a car you will spend most of the day on buses.
  • Riverside trails can flood in spring and are icy in winter.
  • Many farm shops and museums open only a few days a week or in summer: check before you travel.
