Kassel
Give Kassel one full day for the Bergpark water displays and one for the museums; two nights in the centre is enough.
Kassel is the main city of North Hesse and the home of the UNESCO-listed Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, a hillside park crowned by the Herkules statue. The old centre was flattened in 1945 and rebuilt in plain 1950s style, so the draw is the park, the art collections and the Brothers Grimm legacy rather than the streets. It also hosts the documenta contemporary art exhibition every five years, which fills every bed in town.
