Jagdalpurजगदलपुर

Go for two nights as a waterfall and Bastar-craft base: Chitrakot and Teerathgarh are the trip, the town itself is half a day.

Jagdalpur is the main town of Bastar district in south Chhattisgarh, 300 km south of Raipur by a good road and the practical base for Chitrakot and Teerathgarh falls, Kanger Valley National Park and the weekly haat markets. Two nights covers the falls and the town museums; the waterfalls only run full after the monsoon, so October to February is the window. It is a small, low-cost, low-crime town, but this is an interior district with a long-running Maoist insurgency: travel by day, on main roads, and skip remote forest tracks.

  • South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
  • South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
  • India ↗Apply for the e-visa only on the official government portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in); lookalike sites charge extra. Check the current rules, fees and how far ahead to apply.
  • India ↗Do not follow anyone who says your hotel is closed, the station ticket office is closed or a road is shut; use the prepaid taxi counter, the metro or an app car.
  • India ↗Carry Indian rupees in small notes (10, 20, 50, 100); change for 500 is often refused.
  • India ↗Parts of the Northeast, Sikkim, Ladakh, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and all border belts need a Protected or Restricted Area Permit or an Inner Line Permit for foreigners; check before you book the route.

Arrive & move

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk between Luniya Square, the palace and Sanjay market; auto-rickshaws cover the rest for short money. The falls and the national park need a car or a hired taxi for the day — there is no useful public transport to Chitrakot, Teerathgarh or the caves. Roads to the falls are paved; side roads into the forest are not.

Door-to-door, not ride time

Chitrakot Falls

go

Door to door: About 1 h each way

Car or taxi west on the Jagdalpur–Chitrakot road, about 38 km (24 mi)

Best light in the afternoon; widest flow July–October. Log huts near the falls if you want to stay out there.

Teerathgarh Falls and Kanger Valley National Park

go

Door to door: About 1 h each way

Car or taxi south, about 37 km (23 mi), then a short detour off the main road

Steps lead down to the base; the park and caves have their own gate hours and a monsoon closure — check before you go.

Kotamsar and Dandak caves

caution

Door to door: About 1 h each way

Car or taxi, about 30 km (19 mi) from town, inside Kanger Valley National Park

Guided entry only and closed in the monsoon; confirm the gate is open the day you plan.

Dantewada (Danteshwari Temple)

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h each way

Car or bus south, about 84 km (52 mi)

A district town on the Bailadila road; go by day and check the current local situation first.

Barsur (Ganesh temple and old sculptures)

caution

Door to door: About 2 h each way

Car, ask locally for the turn-off

Signage is poor; go with a driver who knows the route.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Luniya Square and the town centre

Walkable to the palace, Sanjay market and most hotels; rickshaws wait here.

Chitrakot Falls area

Tourism log huts near the falls, a couple of hundred metres away; quiet at night, no town services.

Kanger Valley road, south of town

Forest lodges near the park gate; useful if you want an early start at Teerathgarh.

Watch out

Safety

Petty crime is low; the real risks are the district's Maoist insurgency, seasonal falls that may be dry, and forest roads after dark. Travel by day, stay on main roads, and keep your documents on you.
  • Chhattisgarh's interior districts have a long-running Maoist insurgency. Tourists have not been targets, but travel only in daylight, on main roads, and do not enter forests or remote villages alone.
  • Do not plan a route west towards Nizamabad or Hyderabad via Bhopalapatnam: the road degrades badly and there is no bridge over the Indravati there.
  • Expect police and paramilitary checkpoints on district roads; carry your passport and visa copy.
  • The falls are seasonal. In the dry months Chitrakot and Teerathgarh can be a trickle — check locally before committing a day.
  • Kanger Valley National Park and the Kotamsar caves close in the monsoon and on some public holidays: confirm at the gate or with the tourism office.
  • Avoid political conversation, especially about the insurgency or national politics; it draws strong reactions.
