Go for two nights as a waterfall and Bastar-craft base: Chitrakot and Teerathgarh are the trip, the town itself is half a day.
Jagdalpur is the main town of Bastar district in south Chhattisgarh, 300 km south of Raipur by a good road and the practical base for Chitrakot and Teerathgarh falls, Kanger Valley National Park and the weekly haat markets. Two nights covers the falls and the town museums; the waterfalls only run full after the monsoon, so October to February is the window. It is a small, low-cost, low-crime town, but this is an interior district with a long-running Maoist insurgency: travel by day, on main roads, and skip remote forest tracks.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk between Luniya Square, the palace and Sanjay market; auto-rickshaws cover the rest for short money. The falls and the national park need a car or a hired taxi for the day — there is no useful public transport to Chitrakot, Teerathgarh or the caves. Roads to the falls are paved; side roads into the forest are not.

Scams and watch-outs
- Chhattisgarh's interior districts have a long-running Maoist insurgency. Tourists have not been targets, but travel only in daylight, on main roads, and do not enter forests or remote villages alone.
- Do not plan a route west towards Nizamabad or Hyderabad via Bhopalapatnam: the road degrades badly and there is no bridge over the Indravati there.
- Expect police and paramilitary checkpoints on district roads; carry your passport and visa copy.
- The falls are seasonal. In the dry months Chitrakot and Teerathgarh can be a trickle — check locally before committing a day.
- Kanger Valley National Park and the Kotamsar caves close in the monsoon and on some public holidays: confirm at the gate or with the tourism office.
- Avoid political conversation, especially about the insurgency or national politics; it draws strong reactions.
Petty crime is low; the real risks are the district's Maoist insurgency, seasonal falls that may be dry, and forest roads after dark. Travel by day, stay on main roads, and keep your documents on you.
